The UK Skilled Worker visa in 2026 requires a job offer from a Home Office-licensed sponsor, a role at RQF Level 6 (graduate-level skill), CEFR B2 English, and a salary of at least £41,700 per year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher. Several major rule changes took effect between July 2025 and April 2026, so older guides are largely out of date.

## Who qualifies in 2026

The Skilled Worker route uses a points-based system. You need 70 points: 50 are mandatory (sponsorship by an approved UK employer, a job at the required skill level, and English language ability), and 20 are tradeable, usually earned through salary, a relevant PhD, or a role on the Immigration Salary List.

The core eligibility criteria as they stand in 2026:

- <strong>Sponsorship.</strong> You must hold a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a UK employer with a Skilled Worker sponsor licence.
- <strong>Skill level.</strong> The job must sit at RQF Level 6 (bachelor's degree equivalent) or higher. This threshold was raised from RQF Level 3 with effect from 22 July 2025, removing many mid-skill roles from the route.
- <strong>English.</strong> From 8 January 2026, new Skilled Worker applicants must show English at CEFR B2 (upper-intermediate), up from B1.
- <strong>Salary.</strong> Your gross salary must be at least £41,700 per year, or the going rate for your Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code, whichever is higher. The hourly equivalent for most Table 1 roles is £17.13 based on a 48-hour week.
- <strong>Maintenance funds.</strong> You need £1,270 held in your account for 28 consecutive days, unless your sponsor certifies maintenance on the CoS.
- <strong>Criminal record certificate.</strong> Required for certain occupations (notably education, healthcare, and roles involving vulnerable people).
- <strong>TB test.</strong> Required if you have lived in a listed country in the past six months.

A reduced salary threshold of £33,400 applies if your role is on the Immigration Salary List (ISL), if you are a "new entrant" (under 26, a recent graduate, or switching from a Student or Graduate visa), or if you hold a PhD relevant to the job. STEM PhDs can reduce the requirement further against the going rate.

Two categories of applicant face specific restrictions in 2026. Care worker and senior care worker roles (SOC 6135 and 6136) closed to new overseas applicants from 22 July 2025, although in-country switching remains possible until 22 July 2028. From 26 March 2026, a "visa brake" introduced via Statement of Changes HC 1691 refuses all out-of-country Skilled Worker entry clearance applications by Afghan nationals.

## The 2026 salary rules in detail

The salary floor of £41,700 replaced the previous £38,700 figure for CoS assigned on or after 22 July 2025. But the threshold is only one of three numbers a sponsor must clear for each role:

1. The general £41,700 floor (or the discounted rate if applicable).
2. The going rate for the specific SOC occupation code.
3. The minimum hourly rate of £17.13.

Your pay must meet whichever is highest.

A significant compliance shift takes effect from 8 April 2026. Under the new paragraph SW 14.3B of Appendix Skilled Worker, sponsors must demonstrate that salary thresholds are met <strong>in each individual pay period</strong>, not just averaged over the year. Bonus-heavy or commission-based pay structures that previously passed an annual check may now fall short in a given month. Under the transitional rule in HC 1691, a CoS allocated before 8 April 2026 is generally decided under the rules in force on 7 April 2026.

### Salary thresholds at a glance

| Category | Minimum salary (2026) |
|---|---|
| Standard new applicant | £41,700 |
| Immigration Salary List role | £33,400 |
| New entrant (under 26 / recent graduate / Student switch) | £33,400 |
| PhD relevant to the job | £33,400 |
| Hourly minimum (most Table 1 roles) | £17.13/hr |

The Immigration Salary List and the Temporary Shortage List (TSL) are both time-limited to expire on 31 December 2026 unless renewed. TSL workers cannot bring dependants, an important consideration for families.

## Document checklist

Gather these before you start the online application. Missing documents are the single most common cause of delay.

- Valid passport (with at least one blank page).
- Certificate of Sponsorship reference number from your employer.
- Proof of English at CEFR B2: a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider, a degree taught in English (with UK NARIC/Ecctis confirmation if from outside the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or an English-majority Caribbean country), or nationality from a majority English-speaking country.
- Bank statements showing £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days (unless waived on the CoS).
- TB test certificate (if applicable).
- Criminal record certificate from any country lived in for 12 months or more in the last 10 years (for relevant occupations).
- PhD certificate and Ecctis statement (if claiming PhD points).
- Evidence of relationship for any dependants applying with you (marriage certificate, birth certificates).

## Application steps

For most applicants outside the UK, the process runs as follows:

1. <strong>Receive a job offer</strong> from a UK employer holding a valid sponsor licence. The employer must show the role is genuine, meets the skill level, and pays at or above the relevant threshold.
2. <strong>Get your Certificate of Sponsorship.</strong> The employer assigns the CoS and gives you a reference number. You must apply for the visa within 3 months of receiving the CoS, and you can submit up to 3 months before the job start date.
3. <strong>Check your salary points</strong> against the £41,700 floor (or reduced rate), the going rate, and the £17.13 hourly minimum.
4. <strong>Complete the online application</strong> on GOV.UK. Pay the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge during submission.
5. <strong>Book and attend a biometrics appointment</strong> at a Visa Application Centre (overseas) or UKVCAS centre (inside the UK). Submit supporting documents.
6. <strong>Wait for a decision.</strong> Standard processing is around 3 weeks from outside the UK and around 8 weeks for in-country switching or extensions. Priority (5 working days) and Super Priority (next working day) services are available for additional fees.
7. <strong>Collect your visa or eVisa.</strong> Most new visas are now issued digitally; you link your status to your UKVI account and use your passport for travel.

A visa is granted for up to 5 years per CoS. Extensions are unlimited in principle, provided you continue to meet the requirements.

## Fees, charges, and total cost in 2026

The Home Office fee schedule was updated on 8 April 2026. Costs add up quickly once dependants are included.

| Item | Amount (2026) |
|---|---|
| Application fee, out-of-country, ≤3 years | £819 |
| Application fee, out-of-country, >3 years | £1,618 |
| Application fee, in-country, ≤3 years | £943 |
| Application fee, in-country, >3 years | £1,865 |
| ISL discounted fee, ≤3 years | £628 |
| ISL discounted fee, >3 years | £1,235 |
| Health and Care Worker visa, ≤3 years | £324 |
| Health and Care Worker visa, >3 years | £628 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge (adult) | £1,035/year |
| Immigration Health Surcharge (child/student) | £776/year |
| Certificate of Sponsorship (employer pays) | £525 |
| Immigration Skills Charge, large/medium sponsor (employer pays) | £1,320/year |
| Immigration Skills Charge, small/charitable sponsor (employer pays) | £480/year |
| ILR application (after qualifying period) | £3,226 |

The Immigration Skills Charge rose 32% on 16 December 2025. Some employers ask candidates to cover part of the visa cost, but the CoS fee and Skills Charge legally cannot be passed on to the worker. Health and Care Worker visa holders remain fully exempt from the IHS.

For a single applicant on a 3-year visa from overseas, expect to budget roughly £819 (application) plus £3,105 (3 years of IHS), totalling around £3,924, before flights, biometric appointment fees, and translation costs.

## Common pitfalls

- <strong>Going-rate miscalculations.</strong> SOC codes have specific hourly and annual rates. A salary that clears £41,700 can still fail if the going rate for that occupation is higher.
- <strong>Pay-period failures from April 2026.</strong> Salaries that meet the annual figure but dip below the threshold in a given month now risk refusal or compliance action.
- <strong>B2 English from January 2026.</strong> B1 certificates are no longer enough for new applicants. Book a SELT at B2 if you don't qualify through nationality or degree.
- <strong>Maintenance funds held too briefly.</strong> The £1,270 must sit in your account for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before you apply.
- <strong>Job loss.</strong> If you lose sponsored employment, the Home Office can curtail your leave to 60 days (or until visa expiry, whichever is sooner) for you to find a new sponsor.
- <strong>Care worker assumptions.</strong> Overseas applications for SOC 6135/6136 are closed. Anyone offered a care role from abroad should verify the SOC code carefully.
- <strong>Dependant restrictions.</strong> Workers on the Temporary Shortage List cannot bring partners or children.

## Frequently asked questions

<strong>How long does the visa last?</strong> Up to 5 years per Certificate of Sponsorship. You can extend as long as you continue to meet the requirements.

<strong>When can I apply for settlement?</strong> The current qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain is 5 years, but a government consultation that ran from 20 November 2025 to 12 February 2026 proposed extending this to 10 years for many routes, with implementation expected from April 2026. Check GOV.UK for the latest position before planning your timeline.

<strong>Can I bring my family?</strong> Yes, for standard Skilled Worker visas. Partners and children under 18 can apply as dependants. Workers sponsored under the Temporary Shortage List cannot.

<strong>Can I change jobs?</strong> You can change roles within the same sponsor without a new visa in some cases, but switching employers requires a new CoS and a change-of-employment application.

<strong>Does the visa lead to British citizenship?</strong> Indirectly. After ILR, you can normally apply for naturalisation 12 months later (or immediately if married to a British citizen), subject to residency and good character requirements.

<strong>What if my application is refused?</strong> You will receive written reasons. Depending on the ground, you may have a right to administrative review or, in limited cases, judicial review. Re-applying with corrected evidence is often the faster route.

<strong>Where do I find the authoritative current rules?</strong> The GOV.UK Skilled Worker visa page and the Home Office caseworker guidance (most recently published 11 May 2026) are the official sources. Fees, going rates, and shortage lists change frequently, so verify before applying.

## How the UK route compares

If you're weighing options, the UK is one of several skilled-migration destinations worth comparing on salary, sector, and family rules. For points-based and sector-specific alternatives, see our guides to [USA work visas for skilled workers](https://migaku.com/blog/language-fun/usa-work-visas-compared-h-1b-o-1-and-eb-1-for-skilled-workers), [Germany's Ausbildung visa for trade skills](https://migaku.com/blog/language-fun/germanys-ausbildung-visa-how-foreigners-can-train-in-a-trade), and the [Japan Specified Skilled Worker visa](https://migaku.com/blog/language-fun/japan-specified-skilled-worker-ssw-visa-industries-and-eligibility).

If you're heading to the UK from a non-English-speaking background, the new B2 requirement means English fluency is now a gate, not a goal. Migaku helps you build that level using real shows, news, and books in your target language, so [try Migaku](https://migaku.com/signup) if you want a working command of English (or any language) before you move.
