Did the Card Generating Mechanism for The Spanish Migaku change recently?
Cards now suddenly have a bunch of new vocabulary words. Whenever I generate cards, I end up with even more unknown words in the actual card itself, making reading them a bit irritating.
Also, when generating cards from Anime, the cards' translations are quite distinct from the actual meaning. I know that closed captioning isn't available for all shows, but the meanings aren't usually so different. The show I am currently watching is Demon Slayer on Netflix. Was there a recently change in how cards are generated?

How can I tell what it's doing?
?
I will get some example screenshots

Oh, and there are also other cards like this, where
1) There's no star rating/frequency rating for the word
2) The definition doesn't align with the translation it gives. It says it is "to mutter" not "to chew". I'm guessing it's both, but why doesn't it show the other definition?

The card below is fine. But both cards were generated the same day, I don't know why one card is generated properly, while the other is incomplete.

Here is an example of a card being generated with new vocabulary - Vislumbra

Maybe it's coincidental, but usually it doesn't introduce such random terminology.

You also have cards like this which take a LITERAL meaning to a word, and don't use any of the other associated meanings.

Finally, here is the example that made me start this thread - the audio and subtitles don't line up at all, and the translation seems to fit with the audio, rather than the spanish sentence.

It's because the translation is from Netflix subs and it's a sentence fragment. The translation you would need is from the next line (unfortunately)
if you don't want this to happen, you can turn off secondary subtitles from being used as the translation
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
But that has not been an issue with any other show.
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
it happens from time to time, not super common
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
What does that entail?
Will it disrupt future translations?

variable-limeOP•7mo ago
What are "secondary subtitles?"
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
you can have 2 subtitles loaded at once, one as the target language, and the other as the translation language. Some people use both in their immersion or you can have them only show when you pause/hover/etc.
In this case, the settings detect that english subs are available which is your secondary subtitle lang and automatically uses them (under the assumption that they will be a higher quality translation than AI)
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
Oh I remember that... I turned that off day one since it was distracting...
Ohhhhh
Okay....
So if there's significant difference between the two translations, if it preferentially uses the english subs, I'll get cards like this?
I wonder if that featured should automatically be turned off by default, this would have saved me issues. I hope that now the cards will translate the subtitles I'm clicking.
Because this has been very annoying
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
The syntax for languages differ and sometimes the subtitlers will choose to rearrange what is said over 2 different subtitles, in which case it won't match up
Secondary subtitles rarely don't match and are higher quality so that's why it's default
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
Oh shoot... Well... Now I'm afraid to leave it off because what if I miss the occasional good translation..?
So what... happened here exactly..?
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
Well in Migaku Memory it's less of a factor because if you see a bad translation you can just add the AI translation right into the card
but that's not available in anki
so it's up to you

Demon Slayer seems to be a show where what is being said, more often than not, differs drastically from the subtitles....
Is there an option to add both translations to the card?
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
netflix? what episodes? I'll take a look
no
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
Tbh most of them. With shows like Hunter x Hunter, the subtitles are usually pretty consistent with what's being said
With Demon SLayer, the subtitles often include extra words, sometimes more complicated words. At times, the characters will also shorten the subtitles to make it sound more natural- Like subtitles will say, "Sea cual sea...." when the characters just say, "sea..."
There's also the possibility that, as I've become more acquainted with Spanish, I'm just noticing more differences now, but even my friend said the subtitles for this show on Netflix were frustrating

@0rganizer do you have English (CC) or English selected?
variable-limeOP•7mo ago

variable-limeOP•7mo ago
No.
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
can you click on the tab
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
Which one?
oh
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
nvm it's gonna be English CC for sure
variable-limeOP•7mo ago

flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
change it to regular english
looks like they match up way more
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
Just for this one show?
I hope I'll remember to revert it for other shows, thank you! Is there a reason those other cards were generated like they were? Like the verb revolver being interpreted as the literal noun?
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
Another card...

variable-limeOP•7mo ago
It just uses the cognate.
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
The word is misspelled in the subtitle so it pulls up the verb. Not really anything we can do about that.
idk what you mean by "literal noun." In the sentence, it is a noun
idk what's wrong with this one either. Can you explain?
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
But can it actually be used like that? ACcording to the definition, it should be something "bodywide/systemic" or at least relating to the body. I asked chat gpt to generate the sentence: El yoga mejora la conciencia corporal.
oh wait.
So...
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
Corporal is the adjective for body.
Corporal punishment = physical punishment
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
Yeah...
I just... realized that..
I kid you not, I had no idea.
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
no worries
basically a set phrase in english
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
I've never heard of the word "corporal" be used in any other context lol
Yeah exactly
Is it more frequently used in Spanish than in Englsih?
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
Spanish strongly prefers to use adjectival forms of words instead of nouns as adjectives
so, in English it's more common to use "body" as an adjective instaed of corporal, correct
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
Oh...
So like "Huelga laboral"?
I haven't really noticed that. Thank you for telling me. Anyways, since I set the secondary subtitles to English (regular) it looks like that resolved the issue

Thank you 🙂
flat-fuchsia•7mo ago
exactly
yw!
variable-limeOP•7mo ago
This will be very useful to know. Thank you very, very much :D.
