Netflix Not Working At All (Mac, Chrome)

Today I have started using Migaku with Netflix for the first time and it is not properly working for me. I managed to add a few flashcards in the beginning, but now every time I try to add a word Netflix jumps back and freezes. Also my mouse becomes a "prohibited sign" shape and doesn't work in any tab in the browser until I disable Migaku in Netflix. The word never gets added to the card creator. I have 0 issues with YouTube nor with Animelon when it was still online. I should add that occasionally in testing / playing around with closing and re-opening netflix, disabling and enabling Migaku and closing / re-starting Chrome altogether, I can sometimes add a card from Netflix. It consistently fails on the next card, however, and I cannot reliably produce a scenario where things work. More often than not, it fails and my Netflix and Migaku both become completely unusable. As for the version details / questions: 1. Migaku extension: 1.21.0 2. Chrome: 132.0.6834.160 (Official Build) (x86_64) 3. OS: MacOS 13.7.4 (22H420) 4. It seems to happen all the time, I tried multiple Netflix series as well. 5. I just tried disabling all my other extensions (and restart), problem still persists.

Very unusual, first time to hear of these symptoms. Low disk space? How much ram? Have you tried a new chrome profile? cc @Saxon for vis

Disk space not great but should be sufficient (26GB), 8GB RAM MacBook, not sure what a Chrome profile is

I can't do too much (it's only a 256 GB disk with many files and work stuff), but I got it up to 43GB and the problem still persists.

@Clapton do you have anything unique about your network connection? VPN? Proxy? Firewall? Or similar? 🤔 The errors in the console there are all Netflix related, seems like they indicate their data is being blocked somehow on the client-side (in your browser)

For Netflix specifically I use NordVPN to get access to Japanse series yes @Saxon But more people must be doing this right? I thought many Japanese learners watch Netflix with a VPN Okay I've done some experimenting now, without a VPN things seem to work fine (the log does actually look the same still though, still all those ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT errors, but they don't seem to matter). Any ideas why a VPN would break Migaku?

I did spot an error now I didn't send before, it happens right about when it freezes (thus with a VPN)

Hi I just installed Migaku today and I suffer from exactly the same issue - Unable to create cards migaku seems to be trying to create the card forever and my mouse also becomes "prohibited sign" on all my tabs. Migaku extension: 1.22.0 Chrome: Version 132.0.6834.162 ((Build officiel) (x86_64) OS: MacOS 12.7.6 I'm not using any VPN It does work fine on youtube

If it is possible.. Can we surface a banner in the UI to communicate that there are errors related to VPN / proxy / network And suggested steps (if any) on how to resolve or report the problem Could Netflix be intentionally or unintentionally doing something to break Migaku ?

I'm trying Migaku with Netflix today for the first time. I can see subtitles, but when I try to add a card it hangs for many minutes, at the end it says something about not being able to record the video, image or audio, something like that. I don't remember the exact words in the error. Anyway it hangs for long time and video can't be played during that. The only way to watch again is refreshing the page. If I try to create a card it will happen again. I tried both the automatic card creation and the add to card editor function. I'm using the latest version of Chrome, I enabled everything in the extension for allowing Migaku to work and I'm using Surfshark VPN with a Taiwan server to access some Mandarin titles on Netflix.

Yes, that is correct - it is very common for users to utilise a VPN to navigate around geo-blocked content We've been investigating this behind the scenes and have learned a lot! As far as we can tell, this issue is unique to Mac users and on Netflix specifically. @Clapton @apollinaire1987 I understand you are both Mac users as you have posted as such. But to confirm, @MrSkittl @pentestguru @Ryan Howells @Poppinfresh: you all have chimed in here as well - are you all Mac users? Also @Clay Smith 🌻🐝, you posted in this thread but it wasn't clear if you were also experiencing the issue - if so, could you please confirm if you are a Mac user?
As far as we can tell, this issue is unique to Mac users and on Netflix specifically
So here's what we know - on Netflix, for some Mac users, Netflix will sometimes fail to accurately seek the video during recording. For example, when we want to record a snippet from the video during card creation (so that we can capture audio, and a screenshot), our code instructs the Netflix player to navigate to the beginning time of the specified snippet, then we wait for it to buffer/load before resuming playback for recording. But, instead it seeks close to that specified time, but doesnt hit the mark - and continuously doesnt hit the mark (being consistently "off the mark") despite our repeated instructions Unfortunately this is also a difficult issue for us to replicate, and we're trying to figure out an adequate fix for it on our side as well. But hopefully that provides some insight, and reassurance that we are indeed trying to figure it out 🙏

🙌 Thank you for the update @Saxon ! It's nice to know that you are still actively working on it, as it's quite a frustrating bug as you may imagine. I was typing up some of my recent experiences with the bug with the hopes to be helpful, but deciding to reproduce them again before sharing them I couldn’t at this point in time. In particular, so far it had seemed that for me personally, VPN did play a role, but perhaps not in the way you had in mind. Rather, the increased latency / ping due to using a VPN may play a role: without a VPN or with a local VPN (one with very small latency in my own city) Netflix actually became somewhat usable, being able to mine about 50% of the times that I sent a word to the card creator. The other times it did still freeze and I need to refresh the page. However, when I connected to Japan (I'm in Europe, so this is high latency), the problem worsened significantly and Netflix became almost completely unusable, sending a word to card creator now only worked 10% of the time, and froze 90% of the time. Now, in just testing again on a Japanese VPN (which I hadn’t been using for a while due to Migaku being unusable), I cannot reproduce the problem at all. I’ve tried to send dozens of cards to the card creator for testing and they all work flawlessly. Has a silent update been pushed that perhaps alleviated or solved the problem? Or is there perhaps something else at play that temporarily alleviates the problem. Two days ago the bug was still very present, also with a local VPN. I will report when I encounter the bug again, just to confirm whether it has somehow been resolved for me or not. One more note for possibly helping reproduce the bug on your side: I am admittedly working on a 5+ year old Intel MacBook that is quite slow to begin with, perhaps this is another factor that causes this to only happen for some Mac users.
foreign-sapphire
foreign-sapphire4mo ago
I confirm I'm a Mac user. For now I tried Migaku only for Chinese content on Netlix, so I used a VPN. Not sure if using a VPN contributes to the problem or not. Thanks for taking care of this problem. If there is anything I can do to provide more useful information for you to solve the problem, let me know.

While I'm not experiencing the issue. In the Chrome dev tools, if you have the VPN off, then you can throttle your connection to a certain speed. Then this maybe can help rule out if it is either a VPN or purely latency issue. Video players will download different parts of the video in different segments. Maybe when the latency is bad it will fetch a different size of blocks (less accurate/precise) that work better for lower latency networks but when Migaku tries to sync it up, then it doesn't work since it excepts the video segments to be more exact / precise.

It can't capture the video. Even if it can't do that, I wished it let me create a card without screenshot and audio, but just the sentence and the word and I could generate audio with AI. It seems I can't do that either. I hope the problem will be fixed soon. I'm on Mac OS 12.7.6 (can't update), latest version of Chrome, latest version of ea migaku browser extension
foreign-sapphire
foreign-sapphire4mo ago
Well, for now I found a way to manually create a card: Select the sentence I'm interested in from the subtitles, paste it in the sentence field of Migaku card creator, copy and paste the word, generate sentence and word audio, eventually generate image. This works for now, but this workflow is 10 times slower than if Migaku grabbed the sentence, target word, audio and image by itself. If I wanted to this on my own, I could just use Anki and some programs. I would like Migaku to handle all this for me, that's why I purchased it. Please find a way to fix it. If sentence mining on Netflix is too time consuming, I may give up doing it.

In this way I don't have original audio and screenshot that would help me for memory retention. I could record the audio and take a screenshot and add them manually, but it would take even longer and it would discourage me from creating many cards

Hey @everyone 👋 I've got a status update I can share here, apologise if you've felt in the dark 🙇‍♂️ Some context: when we record audio and take a screenshot, we instruct the Netflix player to seek to a specific time, and then start recording for the required duration. After we request to seek to the specified time, we wait until Netflix loads that time. What's happening here, is that Netflix will sometimes fail to seek to the specific time. It will be off by a random amount, say a few seconds. And meanwhile we will be waiting and waiting for Netflix to properly seek, and/or to buffer (if necessary). Eventually we give up and it fails. Now, why this happens is a bit of a mystery still. Because, first of all, this only affects a subset of users. First we though it was all Mac users, but then we learned it was 100% replicable on both Mac/Windows on Edge, so it's something Chromium related Furthermore, and what's really confused us, is that this issue isn't caused by us - in fact we can even replicate the issue even without Migaku installed. If you open a Netflix video in Edge, and use the +- 10s controls in the playback toolbar, it will be still be off. In other words, it doesnt seek accurately As far as we know, this only started happening recently, and only on Netflix So whether it's Netflix's fault, or Chromium introduced some change that doesn't jive with how Netflix does things - we don't know And unfortunately we don't know how to fix it at this stage But, we have been investigating 👍 Among our other priorities What we have done in the meantime is add some more debug analytics in the most recent releases that will help us quantify the problem so we can learn more about the affected users, how many users are affected, and whether there is a pattern there (like OS version, or Chromium version similarity or something) I understand this may be frustrating that it is not working, but we are working to restore it. Thank you 🙇‍♂️

If you really can't find it, there are a couple of alternative ways without using the console. Go to the tab or window where you have Netflix open, then : 1) write this in the address bar of the browser where you normally write a URL:
javascript:alert(navigator.userAgent)
javascript:alert(navigator.userAgent)
and hit enter . 2) If that is blocked for security reasons by Chrome, still in the address bar write this:
data:text/html,<script>alert(navigator.userAgent)</script>
data:text/html,<script>alert(navigator.userAgent)</script>
then hit enter. Then copy the displayed message and paste it here if it works. hope it was useful

Well I was debugging the way netflix sets time and it does adjust to some sort of segment boundary (or maybe some offset). Anecdotally it starts doing so after maybe 8 minutes of playback, but I have not proved that. Remember it calculating time since the page was loaded in the same context though so could check what time it expects
