When to mark word as Known

Are there any best practices for when to mark a word as "Known"? I am currently studying Mandarin Chinese by reading and listening/watching content. Sometimes, I may be reading text with no audio. Other times, I may be watching or listening to media with transcript or subtitles. If I am reading a text with no audio and I can visually recognize a word and its meaning, it doesn't necessarily mean I can hear and understand the same word spoken in native level contexts. On the other hand, if I am watching/listening to media and can hear and understand the spoken words, it doesn't necessarily mean I can visually recognize those same words when reading a text. So do people usually create both Sentence/Word Cards and Audio Cards for new Unknown words to make sure they can recognize the words both in reading and listening situations?

Most people just use sentence or word cards and don’t manually mark words as known, if you’re using Migaku memory it’s not necessary, it’ll auto update to known when the learning interval is more than 20 days which if you get a card right every time would take two weeks Treat the known words more as a rough count rather then something that’s 100% accurate and up to date

Since I'm just starting Migaku, I am currently going through the initial process of marking familiar words as "Known". For newly encountered Unknown words, do people usually make an audio sentence card in addition to the sentence/word card?

No most people don’t make audio cards Did you use Anki before? You could import your known words from it

I have used Anki, but I was very inconsistent with making and actually using the flash cards. That's one of the reasons I'm trying Migaku. It felt too time consuming and boring to make the flashcards in Anki and I just wanted to spend more time consuming content.

That’s fair. In general I think people can recognize a word in reading before listening. IMO as long as you can know the meaning and reading of a word then you can mark it as known. Noticing it in listening usually comes after from just more immersing overtime

Cool, thanks for sharing your insights! I'll just stick with the sentence/word cards for now and see how that goes.
