「と」(1) List things

The particle と​ has many (a metric ton of) uses in Japanese. One of those uses is to combine nouns with the meaning of and and create an exhaustive list. The final と​ is omitted most of the time and A, B and C are expressed as A​と​B​と​C​.

The normal structure is A​と​B​, with a と​ in between the listed elements, similar to and. To be clear, this structure can be used to list more than two items.

Special Note

The structure A​と​B​と​, with a と​ appearing after each item in the list, is also grammatically correct, but is not frequently used.

と can only be used to connect nouns or noun phrases. It cannot be used to connect adjectives.

The correct way to list i-adjectives is to use the て-form, which we will cover later.
