Verbifies nouns

Many nouns in Japanese can be transformed into verbs by attaching the verb する to do to them. The usage of the particle γ‚’ in between is optional.

勉強(べんきょう)

Study

勉強(べんきょう)(γ‚’)する

To study

明ζ—₯(γ‚γ—γŸ)、友達(ともだけ)に電話(でんわ)する。

I’ll call my friend tomorrow.

In dictionaries that translate Japanese to English, these nouns are labeled as suru verbs. In dictionaries that translate Japanese to Japanese, the header of the dictionary definition will include the label スル to indicate that the noun can be transformed into a verb using する to do.

Special Note

In the cards for this lesson, to contrast the usage of each nounβ€”once as a pure noun and once as a suru-verbβ€”each noun will first appear in its noun form, and then in a second sentence be used as a suru-verb.
