あまり is an adverb that can mean not very or not much. It is often used to express a negative feeling or lack of something.

You will most often encounter it in negative sentences.
最近はあまり運動しない。
I don’t exercise much these days.
ピザはあまり食べないけど、時々食べる。
I don't eat pizza much, but sometimes I do.

A construction that you'll also encounter frequently is the following, which is kind of a set phrase that expresses too much or that is heartless.
それはあんまりだ。
That's too cruel.
Special Note
あんまり is just a phonological variant of あまり. They have the same meaning.
