However

けど can be used to connect two clauses with the meaning of but. It can also be used as けど at the beginning of a sentence.

As with けど, it indicates information contrary to expectation, so it can be translated as however.

2時間(にじかん)()ったけど(かれ)()なかった

I waited for 2 hours. But he didn't come.

()いたいことわかるけど()まったこと()えられない

I understand what you want to say. But we can't change what's been decided.

Special Note

Here is one way you can think of this expression to make it easier to remember. expresses that something exists a certain way, so we can think of it as meaning it is this way.

And as we learned in the previous lesson, けど expresses a contradiction similar to but.

If we now combine these two, we get + けど it is this way, but, in reference to some previous statement.
