「か」(2) Mark alternatives

In addition to forming questions, か can also function as a particle to indicate alternative options.

か can be used to mark either sentences or nouns. In the standard construction of AかBか, the second か is optional.

ケーキにするか、ご飯(はん)にするか迷(まよ)っている。

I’m torn between cake or rice today.

今日(きょう)は雨(あめ)だから、家(いえ)で雑誌(ざっし)か本(ほん)を読(よ)もう。

Since it’s raining today, I’ll read a magazine or a book at home.

家(いえ)で食(た)べるか、レストランに行(い)くか、まだ決(き)めていない。

I haven’t decided yet whether to eat at home or go out to a restaurant.
