「この・その・あの」This, that and that over there

「この・その・あの」This, that and that over there

This, that, that

この, その and あの are demonstratives similar to これ, それ, and あれ. Both sets of demonstratives can be translated to this, that and that (over there), respectively.

The biggest difference between the two is that the former are always directly followed by nouns. Let's take a look at each in action.

この(くるま)

this car

1

Use この for objects that are close to you, like a pen you are carrying.

この(くるま)(たか)けど(はや)くない

This car is expensive, but it's not fast.

2

Use その for things that are farther away from you or close to the listener.

その(いぬ)かわいくない

That dog is not cute.

3

Use あの for objects that are far away or out of reach.

あの(ひと)先生(せんせい)です

That person over there is a teacher.

あの(みせ)ラーメン()べた

If you are curious how the demonstratives in Japanese are written in kanji form, here is an overview.
They are only rarely written this way, so you don't need to remember these.
