「これ」For this
「これ」For this
This (near the speaker)
これ is one of the four demonstratives これ this、それ that、あれ that over there and どれ which.
In English, これ can be translated as this. The usage of the three demonstratives これ, それ, and あれ is determined by the location of the object in relation to the speaker and listener.
これ is used when the object in question is near the speaker or when it is near both the speaker and the listener.
これは私の本です。
This is my book.
これ、すごくおいしいよ!
This is really delicious!
Special Note
Try to make a mental note of こ being associated with something close, as this pattern is used again with other words. All demonstratives in Japanese can also be written in kanji form, but are almost never written that way. If you are curious what they would look like, here is a small table:
...れ | ...(そ)こ | ...の | ...ちら | |
---|---|---|---|---|
こ... | 此れ | 此処 | 此の | 此方 |
そ... | 其れ | 其処 | 其の | 其方 |
あ... | 彼れ | 彼処 | 彼の | 彼方 |
ど... | 何れ | 何処 | 何の | 何方 |
Special Note
In Japanese, demonstratives like this are called 指示語.
