「くん」Refer to people
「くん」Refer to people
Suffix for people with lower rank than the speaker
くん is one of those words you may have already picked up through years of consuming copious amounts of anime. If not, let's briefly go over it.
君 can be added to a person's first or last name, but only if the person is of a lower rank than the speaker. For example, it wouldn't be appropriate to use it for your teacher if you're a student.
While it is most commonly used to refer to men, it can also be used for women.
学校で田中くんに会った。
I met Tanaka-kun at school.
次は山田くんの番だ。
Next, it’s Yamada-kun’s turn.
Special Note
When used after a name, it can be written in kanji form, or in hiragana.
山田くん・山田君
Yamada-kun
