Show subjective quality
み is another suffix that can be attached to い- and な-adjectives to add a specific nuance.
In many cases, adjectives ending in さ and み can be translated to the same English word, for instance, 重さ and 重み both translate to weight.
However, there is a difference between the two; み conveys a subjective quality that can't be quantified. For instance, 重み would not be used to indicate the physical weight of something, but rather something abstract, like the "weight" of a decision.
For い-adjectives, simply attach み to the い-adjective-stem.
重い → 重み
Heavy → weight
For な-adjectives, just attach み to the end.
新鮮 → 新鮮み
Fresh → freshness
Here are some examples using ~み in a sentence.
彼のアイデアには新鮮みがあって、みんな驚いた。
His idea had a sense of freshness that surprised everyone.
このトマトは自然な甘みがあってとても美味しい。
This tomato has a natural sweetness and tastes really good.
Special Note
This suffix can only be used with a limited number of adjectives. These are often adjectives that express qualities that are subjective in nature.
