Mental Health Care in Korea: English Speaking Therapists and Resources

South Korea now funds mental health care for foreign residents in English. If you hold an Alien Registration Card and pay into the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS), you can get up to 12 reimbursed sessions per year at English-speaking clinics, pay a fixed co-payment of KRW 8,000 per 50-minute session, and access several free or subsidized programs.

  • Original passport and Alien Registration Card (both sides)
  • NHIS ID card or mobile digital certificate
  • Korean bank account number for reimbursement
  • One smartphone photo of your visa stamp page
  • Completed “Foreign Resident Mental Health Support Program” form (download from mohw.go.kr/mental-eng)

  • Previous psychiatric records translated into English or Korean
  • List of current prescriptions with generic names
  • Vaccination record for inpatient admissions (some hospitals still require COVID-19 status)

Step-by-step application for reimbursed therapy

  1. Find a provider
    • Use the Multilingual Mental Health Portal (mohw.go.kr/mental-eng). Filter by language: English, city, and “accepts NHIS”.
    • 312 licensed professionals are currently listed with real-time appointment slots.
  2. Book and attend
    • Reserve directly on the portal or call the clinic. Most offer initial appointments within 7 calendar days.
    • At the front desk, present your NHIS card. You will pay the fixed co-payment of KRW 8,000 before the session.
  3. Claim reimbursement (optional top-up)
    • After the session, the clinic uploads the receipt to NHIS.
    • NHIS automatically deposits up to KRW 150,000 into your Korean bank account within 5 working days.
    • You can repeat this up to 12 times in one calendar year.
  4. For voucher users (non-NHIS)
    • Apply online at the Korea Health Promotion Institute. Upload your ARC and proof of residence.
    • Receive the digital voucher by email within 5 working days.
    • Present the QR code at any of the 42 designated clinics; the KRW 100,000 credit is applied instantly.

Inpatient psychiatric care: NHIS reimburses up to KRW 1.95 million per admission. Stays longer than 60 days require pre-authorization from your NHIS regional branch.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

  • Mismatch between insurance and provider – Only NHIS-contracted clinics trigger the KRW 8,000 co-payment. Verify the “NHIS contracted” tag on the portal before booking.
  • Student premium lapse – Foreign students who miss the monthly KRW 71,050 payment lose coverage instantly. Set an auto-transfer from your Korean bank.
  • Telehealth residency rule – If you leave Korea even briefly, NHIS will not reimburse tele-mental-health sessions performed abroad. Keep your phone GPS active as proof.
  • Voucher expiration – Digital vouchers expire 90 days after issue. Schedule your appointment immediately after receiving the code.
  • F-5 visa holders – If you recently switched to F-5 Permanent Residency in Korea, update your NHIS category from “local” to “employed/self-employed” if you work, otherwise you will be charged the higher local premium rate.

Telehealth and online therapy rules

Since 1 March 2026, NHIS reimburses tele-mental-health sessions at the same rate as in-person visits. Requirements:

  • Session must be real-time video (not chat or email).
  • You must be physically in Korea during the call.
  • Provider must be NHIS-contracted and hold a Korean medical license.
  • Use a Korean mobile number for identity verification.

Popular platforms integrated with NHIS billing:

  • MindTalk Korea – English-language app with Korean-licensed psychologists
  • Dr.Now Global – Web portal with psychiatrists from Seoul National University Hospital
  • Himedi Global – Same-day booking, accepts voucher and NHIS

Mental health orientation for new workers

From 1 July 2026, foreign workers on E-9 visas must complete a 2-hour online mental-health orientation within 90 days of arrival. The course covers stress management, workplace harassment reporting, and how to use the English hotline. Failure results in a KRW 100,000 administrative fine. The orientation is free and accessed via the Ministry of Justice’s HiKorea portal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my foreign insurance instead of NHIS?
Only if the insurer has a direct billing agreement with the Korean hospital; otherwise you pay first and claim later. Most U.S. and European insurers do not cover routine outpatient mental health in Korea.

Do I need a referral letter from a Korean GP?
No. You can book directly with a psychiatrist or psychologist who lists English service on the portal.

Are prescriptions written abroad valid in Korea?
Bring the original bottle plus an English letter from your physician. Korean pharmacies will only dispense controlled substances if the doctor is licensed in Korea.

Can family members access these services?
Spouses and children on dependent visas are covered under the same NHIS policy. Each person has their own 12-session annual cap.

What if I leave Korea mid-year?
Unused sessions do not carry over. Cancel appointments at least 24 hours in advance to avoid no-show charges.

Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Korean medical privacy law (Personal Information Protection Act) applies to all patients. Records are stored in Korean, but English-speaking clinics provide translated summaries on request.

How do I complain about service quality?
Contact the Korea Health Promotion Institute at 044-202-7533 (English available) or file a report on the Multilingual Mental Health Portal.

If you are moving to Korea on a D-8 Corporate Investor Visa or planning a longer stay after your 1 Week Korea Itinerary, registering for NHIS and bookmarking the portal above will make access to mental health care seamless.
