「なる」The state or condition changes

「なる」The state or condition changes

To become X

By utilizing adjectives and specific nouns, the verb なる to become can convey that the state or condition of a person or object has changed into something different. なる is most commonly used with adjectives.

1

When なる is used with な-adjectives, it must be paired with , as in Aなる.

この(まち)(しず)なった

This town has become quiet.

この(くすり)気分(きぶん)(らく)なる

This medicine will make you feel more at ease.

2

To attach なる to an い-adjective, it has to be in its adverbial く-form.

子供(こども)(おお)きくなった

The child has grown up, hasn’t he?

最近(さいきん)(さむ)なった

It has gotten cold lately, hasn't it?

Special Note

One important note, as always, is that いい behaves differently from other い-adjectives. As we touched on before, the original form of いい is よい, and all conjugations are still based on this original form.

This means that in this case, we get よくなる, not いくなる!

Formation

い-Adjective-Stem + く + なる

おいしくなる

な-Adjective + になる

元気(げんき)なる
