Using い-adjectives to describe verbs
Using い-adjectives to describe verbs
Describe verbs
Adverbs are words you use to describe verbs or adjectives. In the English sentence He runs quickly, quickly is the adverb, as it describes how he runs.
When it comes to い-adjectives, transforming them into adverbs is a simple process. Simply add く to the い-adjective stem (the い-adjective minus い).
早い → 早く
quick → quickly
早く食べる
Eat quickly
Remember that いい good is an exception when it comes to conjugations. The く-form of いい is よく.
彼は速く走った。
He ran quickly.
風が強く吹いている。
The wind is blowing strongly.
彼は上手くピアノを弾いた。
He played the piano skillfully.
Special Note
As can be seen above, in our lessons, you'll encounter the term conjugation to describe the various forms of Japanese verbs. Technically, what occurs in Japanese is not conjugation as commonly understood, but rather a process called agglutination. In agglutination, longer words are formed by combining smaller units of meaning, which can also be disassembled.
For the sake of clarity and ease of understanding, we've opted to use the term conjugation throughout our lessons.
